Battery Storage in Mallorca: When It's Worth It and When It's Not

In a nutshell: Battery storage in Mallorca is especially worthwhile if you consume a lot of electricity in the evening and at night, or if you want to be protected during power outages. If you consume most of your power during the day or if the property is often vacant, you can often do without storage. The right size depends on your evening consumption, not on the size of the PV system.
What does a battery storage system do?
During the day, the solar system supplies your home first. Surplus electricity charges the battery. In the evening and at night, the battery supplies this electricity; only when it is empty is power drawn from the grid.
Without battery storage, the surplus goes into the grid. You receive compensation for this, but it is usually significantly lower than the price you pay for grid electricity in the evening.
When storage is worthwhile
High evening and night consumption: Air conditioning in the bedroom, pool pump in the evening, charging an EV overnight.
Year-round use: The property is permanently occupied or rented out.
Backup power desired: In the event of a power outage, a backup-capable battery keeps the most important loads running for as long as it is charged.
Expensive evening tariffs: Electricity during peak hours (punta, from 6 pm to 10 pm) is the most expensive.
When you probably don't need one
You consume most of your electricity during the day, such as when working from home or running the pool and cooling systems at midday.
The property sits vacant for many months.
Your electricity provider offers a virtual battery that stores surplus energy as bill credits for later use.
How large should the storage system be?
As a rule of thumb: The battery should roughly cover consumption between sunset and sunrise. A battery that is too large rarely gets fully charged in winter, while one that is too small empties quickly in the evening. Your consumption data broken down hourly reveals the right fit. Sunglow evaluates this for you.
What to look for when choosing a system
Inverter and battery from the same manufacturer: This ensures optimal interoperability, with warranty and service coming from a single source.
Backup power function: Not every battery system can supply power during an outage. Clarify this before purchasing.
Expandability: A modular battery system can be expanded later, for instance, if an EV is added.
Warranty and charge cycles: Pay attention to the warranty duration and guaranteed residual capacity.
Installation location: Cool, dry, and easily accessible, out of direct sunlight.
Physical battery or virtual battery?
Battery storage: Stores surplus electricity locally at home as power, provides backup during outages (with backup-capable systems), and is independent of the utility provider. However, it requires an upfront investment.
Virtual battery: Stores surplus energy with the provider as monetary credits toward future bills. It requires no hardware, but provides no backup power and depends on the electricity provider.
Both address different needs and can also be combined.
Subsidies for battery storage
Grants have been and continue to be available for battery storage in the Balearic Islands. Whether a program is currently open and what subsidy amount applies to you is assessed on a case-by-case basis, subject to approval. Sunglow handles the application process for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I retrofit a battery later?
In many cases, yes—most easily with a hybrid inverter that is already battery-ready.
Will my home function during a power outage with a battery?
Only if the system is backup-capable. In that case, connected essential circuits continue to run as long as the battery has a charge.
Is a battery worth it for a holiday villa?
If rented out for many months, often yes; for occasional use, usually not. The key factor is evening consumption during periods of occupancy.
How long does a battery storage system last?
Modern batteries are designed to last for many years and thousands of charge cycles. The manufacturer's warranty terms are the decisive reference.
